From what I hear(or actually, don't hear) the AWD driveline is considered to be quite robust, some parts being adopted from the EVO rally cars.
My TL AWD at 195,000km is rather quiet - rear differential included.
I wish I could offer more help, but in this instance, I have not experienced the noise that you refer to.
The driveline on my car has recently had all fluids changed, including having the genuine Mitsubishi special fluid added to the rear diff.
The only remark by the mechanic performing the operation - Brendan at MitsFix, was that my rear diff was slightly "clunky".
Possibly your rear diff might need a dose of DiaQueen supplement.
They are about $45 for a small bottle.
Here is confirmation from another thread:

It is called Mitsubishi Friction Modifier for LSD Oil.
Part No. MB664682.
Its not cheap. The bottle is 100ml and cost around $40. But you only use 50ml per oil change.
May be worth adding first before you put in your new oil so you dont spill it.
Its not for the centre diff, just the REAR diff.
NOTE: This additive MAY NOT solve your particular problem, but according to what I have read, it should be added to the rear diff.
POSSIBLY, whoever last serviced the car did not use this additive, and the damage has now been done.
I would ring forum sponsor MitsFix for advice.

P.S. Since joining AMC almost 5 years ago, this is the first time I have noted that any AWD owner has mentioned rear diff whine.
